Nicol Bolas

Nicol Bolas is a malevolent genius dragon Planeswalker whose influence and schemes span multiple planes of the Multiverse. He is characterized by his extreme intelligence, ruthless nature, and mastery of manipulation.

Rule as the God-Pharaoh of Amonkhet

On the desert plane of Amonkhet, Bolas presented himself as the wise and benevolent God-Pharaoh. In reality, he subverted the entire society to serve his own ends.

  • The Eternal Army: Bolas chose Amonkhet specifically for a magical substance called Lazotep, which interacts powerfully with necromancy. He transformed the plane into a factory for creating Eternals, an elite army of undead soldiers who retain their combat skills but possess no emotions, hesitation, or disloyalty.
  • System of Lies: He built the society of the city-state Naktamun around five trials designed to "perfect" his subjects' bodies and minds. The people believed that dying in the final trial earned them a glorious afterlife; in truth, their bodies were harvested, embalmed in lazotep, and stored in a great necropolis to await his command.
  • Control over the Divine: Bolas seized control of the plane's magic and its five gods, who acted as stewards awaiting his return, unaware that he was exploiting their devotion to build his army.

Influence and Power

  • Twisted Reflections: The angels of Amonkhet were warped into distorted reflections of Bolas, serving as his personal agents to hunt down and punish anyone who questioned his rule.
  • The Sphinx's Curse: Because the sphinxes of Amonkhet possessed impenetrable minds he could not control, Bolas placed them under a curse of silence to prevent them from revealing the truth of his lies to the populace.
  • Distant Superiority: Despite being a dragon himself, Bolas feels no kinship with the other dragons of the Multiverse, whom he views as savage, dim-witted beasts.
  • War of the Spark: Bolas was responsible for an invasion of the plane of Ravnica, utilizing his army known as the Dreadhorde. This invasion resulted in significant loss of life and forced many Planeswalkers and the guilds of Ravnica to unite to defeat him.
