War of the Spark
The War of the Spark was a catastrophic invasion of the plane of Ravnica that occurred approximately five years before the current day of the campaign.
The conflict is defined by the following key events:
- The Invasion: Ravnica was attacked by a massive force of Eternals known as the Dreadhorde. These invaders were part of an army led by the elder dragon Nicol Bolas.
- The Conflict: The entire plane became a war zone where deceased Ravnicans were frequently raised as zombies to bolster the ranks of the invading army. Numerous Planeswalkers from across the multiverse were temporarily trapped on the plane during the fighting and played a crucial role in defending the city.
- The Rebirth of Niv-Mizzet: During the war, the ancient dragon Niv-Mizzet was reborn, awakening as a god, the new avatar of the plane and the Living Guild pact. This divine transformation provided the power necessary to finally defeat the invaders.
- Multiversal Aftermath: The war fundamentally changed Ravnican society by making the general public aware that their world is just one of many within an infinite multiverse. This realization led to the creation of the Ravnica Expedition Corp, a joint venture between the guilds to explore other planes and recruit allies.
The technology used by the invaders, known as the Planar Bridge, has since been studied and perfected by the Izzet League to create the Planar Gate, allowing for the safe travel of living matter between worlds.
